A triathlon is an endurance multisport race consisting of swimming, cycling, and running over various distances. The sequence of events is almost always Swim, Bike and Run; for safety reasons. Since swim is the riskiest, it is best if it is finished off first. And between biking and running, the risk of injury is higher in biking, hence the remainder of the sequence. Triathletes compete for fastest overall completion time, racing each segment sequentially with the time transitioning between the disciplines included.

Triathlon originated in the 1970s, but it has been a fairly recent entry into India. The sport is however fast growing and attracts a lot of athletes into trying out who is the strongest of them all. With very few Triathlons being conducted in India, NEB is proud to be a pioneer in the sport – hoping to give a boost to the growth of tri-culture and making it accessible to all. The second edition of the Udupi Triathlon will be held on the 14th and 15th of Dec 2024.

FAQs

Frequently
asked questions.

In short no, you can swim any stroke you want as long as you make it to the end of the swim by cut-off time. If you wish to use backstroke at an open water event you must indicate this to the Event Organiser before entering the water.Backstroke in open-water can lead to sighting issues though.

Of course you can. But open-water-specific goggles do tend to come with larger lenses, which therefore provide better peripheral vision. The other area to consider is the lens colour, to cope with the different lighting conditions outdoors.

Since we fall in the temperate belt and temperatures of the water are always warm, this event does not allow the use of a wet-suit.

Stay over to one side of the pack or at the back if you’re not racing competitively. If there’s a buoy turn involved, work out your route prior to the start and stay to the outside of that to avoid a squishing. Also remember that it’s all part of the racing experience and no triathlete would put you at risk on purpose.

Yes. The only other ‘aids’ you’re allowed include a cap, goggles and costume.

It’s the odd sensation you’ll experience in your legs as you move from one discipline to the next (swim to bike: bike to run) and as your body gets used to using different muscles. Don’t worry – it’ll abate as you settle into your rhythm.

Yes. Because our race is bound by the terms of their permits, cutoff times will be enforced, and an athlete who is wearing a bib number and timing chip must abide by the rules of the race.

All competitors must have their helmet securely fastened from the time before they remove their bike from the rack before the start of the bike leg, until after they have placed their bike on the rack after the finish of the bike leg. Failure to do so may result in a time penalty.

You will be allowed to use any bike for the event. A tri-bike, UCI Legal TT Bike, Road Bike with TT Bars – are all acceptable to be used in competition. For speed advantage we recommend using one of the above bikes. In case you choose to use an MTB, Commuter or any other bike – please reach out to the organisers for confirmation of use in the event.

The Triathlon is a self-supported event. Participants are expected to have their bikes serviced and upto speed for the event. In case of a puncture or any other mechanical issue on the route, the athlete will be expected to have the tools required to fix it and continue with his event. The cut-off times will also be enforced in such cases.

We encourage friends and family to come and support the athlete through cheering and morale boosting. However, we will not allow any support from the crew which means that Friends, family, coaches or supporters may not at any time bike, drive or run alongside an athlete. They may not pass food or any other items to an athlete and must be warned to stay completely clear of all athletes to avoid disqualification of an athlete.

Yes, we will provide mobile port-a-loo facilities for all athletes along the route.

We recommend the use of a trisuit as it has been specifically designed for this sport. However, if an athlete chooses to wear anything else – he must ensure that the torso is never exposed during the course of the event.

The ITU defines drafting as: The technique of riding in a pack during the cycling event. They define draft zone as: An imaginary area approximately three bicycle lengths long and six feet wide surrounding each competitor during the bike segment.
Basically drafting is a method to increase your speed or decrease your effort by lowering your wind resistance. Since it doesn’t keep for an even playing field, drafting is not allowed in a triathlon.
So stay back at least three bike lengths, and make sure when passing that you are completely finished passing within 20 seconds of entering the drafting zone.

On race morning, you will enter a secured area called the Transition Area. Here you will find tons of bike racks. Your spot on the bike racks will be assigned by your heat or race number. Here you will lay out your towel, shoes, helmet, etc. You will come here after you finish the swim and bike legs to exchange out your gear.

No. Your time is running from the start until you cross the finishline.

No. The transition area will be secure at all times. Therefore no spouses, friends, dogs, etc.are allowed in on race day. They can help you carry your gear to and from transition but once you get to the entrance it is all you.

Yes, organisers will provide aid stations which will have water and electrolytes for the athletes along the entire course. Any other nutrition or hydration requirement specific to the athlete must be incorporated by the athlete themselves.

For some, understandably, a triathlon is a culmination of much dedication, preparation, training time, and family support. It’s a project, it’s a big deal, and you want it all to be worth it.
But sometimes things go wrong out there, in the same way that it might rain on a long-planned outdoor wedding. The swim might not go as well as you expect. You might get a flat tire on the bike. You might experience unexpected cramping on the run.

Triathlon is about the expected as well as the unexpected. The successful triathlete – you – earns that internal and external respect by taking whatever the day, the course and the competition hands you.
There are never answers to all the questions. But there is victory, on your terms, at the finish. And that’s what it’s all about.
