GOONJ (means an echo) a multi award winning organisation, using the cities discard for fueling widespread development work across village India. While dealing with more than 5500 of materials annually, Goonj reaches this material as a resource, as a parallel currency with dignity to the rural communities as they take up large scale development work like recharging water bodies, rebuilding local infrastructure, education, for addressing their own issues. For over 2 decades, Goonj’s work has also led to the systematic changes in the disaster relief & rehabilitation work; while it has also opened up the most taboo issue of menstrual hygiene and providing clean cotton cloth as a viable solution.

In the current COVID-19 pandemic, amidst lockdown, people in many parts of India are facing the blow of other disasters such as cyclone Amphan, Nisarga & annual monsoon floods in Assam & Bihar. The concoctions of disasters along with sinking informal economy has severely impacted the financially weaker, vulnerable and ignored communities which will take years to come back to normal.

Over the last 3 months,Goonj has been reaching out to daily wagers, migrants and other vulnerable groups (tea plantation workers, transgenders, sex workers, terminally ill patients) with access to basic consumables in 25 states/UTs of India Through its flagship initiative ‘Dignity For Work’ (formerly known as - ‘Cloth for Work’), Goonj is now encouraging the communities to work on their local issues. Goonj is now gradually extending to provide local livelihood opportunities to the affected communities, with an aim to stabilize the communities, through our initiative, Vaapsi (Restoring livelihood). For details, please refer- www.goonj.org

It is more critical than ever for everyone to come together as one for people who have been left behind stranded in this crisis. We are there...Need you too... !!
